In “The Living Doll” Savalas’ ill-tempered character is livid when his wife buys his stepdaughter a Talky Tina doll. Smith, TheĪ 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone featured Telly Savalas and a doll that looked and sounded eerily like the popular Chatty Cathy dolls sound alike for a reason: June Foray, the original Chatty Cathy voice, recorded Talky Tina’s lines for the episode. Kind of reminds me of the 1978 movie "The Brood" if you haven't seen it, check it out.īut that concept is kind of disturbing, apparently there was a scene where Buddy turns on Karen so I wonder what she must have done to make him angry.Chatty Cathy doll, 1960, Mattel Inc., Gift of Frank A. maybe he was a little emotionally unstable and unreasonable and therefore all this anger manifests it's self in the murderous form of the living Buddy character during the frankenstien moment where it wants to kill people he doesn't like. I don't know whether it was a part of the script but It seemed to be implied that maybe the boy wasn't the Andy we all know and love, i.e. I'm guessing that's why the victims that we heard about in this script are all authority figures in the kids life. Kind of reminds me of a reverse Hulk where as meek adult bruce banners manifestation of his anger is a brooding beast, this little kids "hulk" is a his favorite toy that runs around in stealth dispatching people for superficial reasons, kids don't have a rational handle on emotions. Here's a cool bit of nostalgia, it's a history of Dons movie career, from his first project sold to united Artist in 1986 to seed what we know as Child's Play, that they reffered to as Bloody Buddy's.Įxactley, I'm trying to imagine what if any kind of personality if any this thing buddy would have, seeing as how the way Don describes it, it's more so a force of nature. I just like hearing about the creative process and learning things we never knew about the characters, I also enjoyed learning about the evolution of chucky like from this concept to the introduction of the Charles lee ray character whom apparently was executed in jail during a lightning storm, and through a Frankenstein moment, his soul is transported into the doll sans voodoo. I really wish this script was floating around so we could read it. The babysitter, his dentist, and even his mother, who Buddy attempts to strangle with his pull string. The boys bad karma some how through what Don refers to as "the frankenstein moment", aka movie magic, is transported into the body of the doll, and when the day dies down and nighttime falls while young Andy sleeps, the doll systematically dispatches all the people the little boy can not lash out at himself. Given to him by his workaholic marketing executive mother, Andyīecomes blood brothers with Buddy(through an unsafe concept that would not stand in this day and age) where Andy cuts his finger and the dolls who's is filled with artificial blood for parents to buy "Buddy Brand" band-aids, and touches fingers. I always wondered what do you guys think about Dons Original 1986 concept for Child's Play the the original concept of "Buddy" a two foot tall spikey haired head band wearing blue eyed doll in lime green sweat pants and red tennis shoes featuring a pull string and a bunch of buddy brand accessories who becomes the embodiment of this demented little boys deep seeded psychological hatred for the people around him.
